Winter Overflow

Providing Safety and Shelter During Extreme Winter Weather

The Winter Overflow program, part of the Nevada Cares Campus, provides temporary shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness during extreme winter conditions. The program ensures that residents have a safe, warm place to stay when temperatures drop or hazardous weather makes outdoor shelter unsafe.

Winter Overflow focuses on protecting residents from immediate dangers of cold weather while providing basic necessities and a secure environment. Staff and partners work together to ensure every participant remains safe and supported until they can access regular campus services or long-term shelter.

How We Support Individuals During Inclement Conditions

Emergency Overlfow Shelter for Extreme Weather: Winter Overflow offers indoor shelter for adults during severe cold, snowstorms, or hazardous conditions. Residents have access to safe sleeping spaces, supervision, and a warm environment to protect against the elements.

Meals and Basic Essentials: Residents are provided hot meals, water, and basic hygiene necessities. The program ensures that participants remain healthy and safe while staying on-site.

Safety and Supervision: Staff maintain a secure environment throughout the Winter Overflow program. Residents are monitored to ensure their well-being and safety while using the temporary shelter.

Transition Support: While Winter Overflow is short-term, staff help residents connect to other Nevada Cares Campus services, like the Emergency Shelter or Resource Center, once regular operations resume or as conditions allow.

Keeping Residents Safe and Warm

Winter Overflow is a critical seasonal resource in Washoe County’s coordinated response to homelessness. By providing emergency shelter, and supervision during extreme winter weather, the program ensures residents remain safe, warm, and cared for until they can return to regular campus services or secure longer-term shelter.
