Exotic Animal Permits

 

SOME EXOTIC ANIMALS REQUIRE A PERMIT

 Pursuant to Washoe County Code (“WCC”) 55.650, many exotic animals intended for private ownership, are required to be permitted by WCRAS.  The regulation separates exotic animals into a three-tiered classification system based on the animal’s characteristics, the risk of the animal to public health and safety, the invasiveness of the species, and concerns for animal welfare.  Tier 1 exotic animals,  such as but not limited to, chinchillas, hedgehogs and sugar gliders are exempt from the permitting requirement.  WCC requires all owners of any Tier 2 exotic animals, such as but not limited to, a constrictor that is greater than 12 feet long and 30 lbs in weight, Nile monitor, kinkajou, ocelot, serval are required to be permitted.   Tier 3 exotic animals, such as but not limited to, clouded leopard, tiger, wolf,  Komodo dragon are required to be permitted.
