Candidate Qualifications

Candidates must be a registered voter and have lived in their district for at least 30 days before the candidate filing deadline. During this filing period, candidates must verify their registration, identity, and eligibility. Acceptable forms of identification include a government-issued ID that shows the candidate’s name and residential address, a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or other government document that displays the name and address. If a standard address is not assigned, or if a candidate lives in a remote area, some alternative proofs may be permitted.

For partisan offices, candidates seeking to file under a major political party must have registered as that party no later than December 31 before the filing deadline.

The majority of offices have a statutorily required fee to file for candidacy, which is payable by cash or check to the Washoe County Registrar of Voters Office.

Filing as a Nonpartisan for a Partisan Office

Nonpartisan candidates can run for a partisan office by qualifying directly for the general election ballot with a petition of candidacy. These candidates do not show up on a primary ballot. Instead, they must file a Declaration of Candidacy and a petition with the required number of valid signatures from registered voters in the appropriate district. Petitions must use the approved form, each signer must be eligible and can sign only once, and petition pages must be submitted for verification before they can access the ballot.
