Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect

If You See the Signs, Make the Call to Protect a Child

Protecting children is a shared responsibility. If you suspect a child may be at risk, your call can start the process of keeping them safe and ensuring they receive the help they deserve.

Emergencies

If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 immediately.

24 Hour Child Abuse & Neglect Hotline

If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, call the Washoe County Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1 (833) 900-SAFE (7233). The hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All calls are confidential, and you may report anonymously.

Filing a Confidential Report

Provide as much identifying information about the child and family as possible. According to NRS 432B.230, helpful information includes:

  • Child’s name, age, sex, and address

  • Parent or caregiver names and addresses

  • Nature and extent of suspected abuse or neglect

  • Any known history of abuse or neglect involving the child or siblings

  • Name, address, and relationship (if known) of the alleged abuser

  • Any other relevant details

Your identity is confidential and will never be disclosed. Reports may also be made anonymously.

When Should a Report Be Made?

  • As soon as reasonably practical

  • You do not need proof that abuse or neglect has occurred

  • Filing a report is a request for investigation; CPS and/or law enforcement determine the next steps

Who Should Report?

  • Anyone with reasonable cause to believe child abuse or neglect may be occurring

  • Under NRS 432B.121, “reasonable cause” means facts or circumstances that would lead a reasonable person to believe abuse or neglect is happening
