Microchipping Your Pet

Staff Microchip Dog

Washoe County Regional Animal Services believes that microchipping is your pet's best chance of being returned home should it ever become lost or stolen. Microchipped pets can be scanned in the field and returned to their homes without ever having to be brought into the shelter. Which is why we offer pet microchipping services free to all Washoe County residents.

Why Microchip Your Pet?

  • Improved Chance of Reunification: In Washoe County, microchipped pets are five times more likely to be reunited with their families! Don’t miss out on this lifesaving advantage.
  • Quick Identification: Microchips are scanned in the field, allowing lost pets to be returned home without a shelter stay.
  • Permanent & Safe: The chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is placed under the skin and lasts a lifetime.
  • National & Local Registration: Pets microchipped at WCRAS are registered in both our local database and the 24PetWatch national database at no cost.

How It Works

A tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is quickly and safely placed under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades. The procedure takes just minutes and provides lifelong protection. Each microchip contains a unique ID number that appears when scanned, linking to your contact information. This ensures your pet can be quickly reunited with you if they ever get lost.
