Formal Education:
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended college at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. I joined NASA at its Ames Research Center in Moffett Field California. I started as a flight test engineer conducting research enabling helicopters to fly safely and effectively at night and in bad weather. I received a graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from Stanford University in 1986. During my 32-year career I also had numerous short course training in management, technology development and employee supervision.
Current Occupation:
I am currently retired, but after my NASA career I spent 10 years consulting on the development advance technology into the Nation’s Air Transportation System. I was a research engineer leading teams to enhance the safety and efficiency of the Nation’s Air Transportation System. Promoted to a supervisory position managing 30 engineers and scientists with a $8,000,000 annual budget. Then promoted again to project management eventually advocating and developing a $500,000,000, 10-year program to assist the FAA. Over my 32-year career at NASA I received many awards including 3 NASA medals for Outstanding Leadership, Special Achievement and Exceptional Technology Achievement.
Government Background:
I was a civil servant at NASA for 32 years providing my skills in both technology development, supervision, and management of research funds. In the latter part of my government/NASA career I routinely had to review and defend our research and funds to Senior NASA Headquarter staff and numerous National independent review committees. These activities provided me with the expertise to understand the government rules and regulations regarding the need for transparency in both fund expenditures as well as highlight successes. This enabled me to fully appreciate how important it is to demonstrate not only proper management of government funds but also the need to show the best “bang for the buck” for the people’s tax money. More recently I have been serving on the IVGID’s Golf Advisory Committee to assist IVGID in maintaining its world class golf facilities and putting them on a more secure and sustainable financial footing.
Reason for seeking position:
I love this Incline Village and Crystal Bay community and have attended numerous Trustee Board meetings since I moved here about 10 years ago. I have always been a bit frustrated in observing the meetings due to my perception that they appear to treat our multi-million-dollar enterprise as a small back-water village, which it is not. Over the last year I observed our community pull itself apart with the Recall often pitting neighbor against neighbor. Coupling this with the departure and resignation of much of the IVGID senior management along with the current investigation into potential financial malfeasance or incompetence, I feel I can help our community with my professional management and financial expertise. I feel I can use my skills to help the rebuilding of the trust and camaraderie within the community.
