What is 5210 Healthy Washoe?

Adapted from Let’s Go, 5210 is a nationally recognized obesity prevention initiative that is an evidence-based framework promoting four simple daily healthy habits.

5210 message

How does it work?

5210 Healthy Washoe helps communities promote a shared, consistent message that ties local efforts together across the community. When being used in a healthcare setting, it can also help address childhood obesity and promote health messaging to support families in making the healthy choice the easy choice using the 5-2-1-0 daily cues.

Target Outcomes

  • Improved awareness of the importance of healthy habits.
  • Increase in healthy habits among kids, families and staff.
  • Increase in healthy weight among youth.

Health Care Professionals Play a Vital Role

Research has shown that primary care providers can and should play an important role in obesity prevention.  Healthcare providers are in a unique position to partner with patients and families/caregivers and to influence key components of the broader strategy of developing community support. To be effective we know that healthcare practice teams need tools and resources that are evidence-based, practical, accessible, and inclusive.
5210 is a community engagement initiative working to improve health behaviors that impact overweight and obesity: healthy eating and active living (HEAL). 5210 is rooted in the social-ecological model of behavior change, which acts upon policy, systems, and environments to make the healthy choice the easy choice. Evidence-based strategies are used to facilitate HEAL in education, schools, food bank pantries, and healthcare practices here in Washoe County.
